10 Tips at Winning at Online Poker

Online poker is much more fun when you win. In order to win consistently, you need to work on your game. With that in mind, here are 10 tips for winning at online poker.

Start With Low Stakes Poker

Regardless of your experience level, it’s advisable to start playing online poker at lower stakes. This allows you to become acclimated with online poker and the subtle differences from live poker.

Also, the average skill level of online poker players is higher than those in low stakes live poker games. Players in an online $1/$2 NL Hold’em game are going to be much more experienced than in a live $1/$2 game. Start at lower stakes and work your way up as your skills improve.

Learn to Multi-Table

The primary advantage to playing online poker is multi-tabling. This allows you to increase your hourly expectation and grow your bankroll faster.

But don’t start multi-tabling right way. Start with playing one table at a time and when you’re comfortable and profitable, add a second table. Continue adding tables for as long as you’re able to play profitably.

Also, don’t be afraid to decrease tables as needed. If you work your way up to playing four tables at a time and start to hit a downswing, drop down to three or even two tables.

The goal to multi-tabling is increasing your hourly rate. It’s better to make $10 an hour at four tables than to make $30 at a single table.

Practice Bankroll Management

Even the best poker players have downswings. The best way to protect your bankroll against downswings is with bankroll management. This is done in three ways.

First, make sure you have a sufficient bankroll for the stakes you’re playing. This is usually 20 to 30 buy-ins for NL and around 300 big bets for limit games.

Next, you don’t want to risk more than around 10% of your bankroll at any one time. This is often referred to as a Stop Loss. For NL Hold’em, a Stop Loss would be about 3 buy-ins while limit games have a Stop Loss of about 30 big bets.

Finally, you need to consider moving down in stakes when you’re in a prolonged downswing. If you’ve been regularly losing at $0.50/$1, you should move down to $0.25/$0.50. This will help reduce the damage of the downswing and rebuild your bankroll by playing against softer competition .

Effective bankroll management will help you can navigate through variance and stay in the game.

Manage Tilt

When you go on tilt, your emotional state dictates your play. This results in poor decision making and steady losses.

Tilt is unavoidable, but it can be managed. When you find yourself getting frustrated or angry, step away from the game for a few minutes to collect your composure.

If you find that you can’t get past the stressor, then you should stop playing for the day. The games will still be there tomorrow and you’ll be in a better mental state for winning.

Take Advantage of Position

Smart poker players consider the strength of their hand compared to their relative position at the table. Playing hands in position presents multiple advantages.

First, you can open up the range of hands you come into the pot with. Next, it allows you to see what’s going to happen in subsequent rounds.

When you play hands aggressively in position, you can take control of the pot on later streets, which results in more wins.

Learn the Odds

Understanding basic hand and pot odds will help you win more often in online poker. You can start by downloading a basic odds chart and memorizing common hand scenarios. Alternatively, you can download calculators that will help you determine the odds.

There are both hand and pot odds calculators available online for download. You may want to consider learning Phil Gordon’s rule of 4 and 2 as explained in his Little Green Book.

We recommend that you start by using odds calculators until you’re comfortable with doing the calculations in your head.

Consider Upgrading Your Equipment

While you can play online poker on most computers, a few upgrades can improve your comfort and performance.

Consider purchasing an ergonomic keyboard, mouse and chair for your online poker grind station. These will help reduce stress on your joints, reduce the chances of developing carpal tunnel and help you stay energized while playing.

Also, consider upgrading your computer equipment. Those of you on older computers should upgrade to a computer with a faster processor, more memory and multiple screens. A computer with a faster processor and more ram will result in smoother gameplay. Multiple screens will allow you to multi-table comfortably.

Avoid Distractions

Online poker requires focus, so it’s important that you minimize distractions. For example, you don’t want to be playing online poker while surfing the internet, streaming Netflix and chatting with someone over Skype.

Also, it’s not a good idea to play online poker with others in the room. Parents should wait until the kids are in bed or at grandma’s house before trying to grind online poker.

Distractions diminish your focus, which can lead to mistakes. Mistakes will lead to reduced profits.

Bluff Less Frequently

One of the appeals of poker is bluffing your opponent off a huge pot. While bluffing is a necessary poker skill, it’s one that you use seldomlyat low stakes.

Bluffing is less effective at lower stakes because of the relative inexperience of most players. They don’t understand why they shouldn’t call with pocket Eights when the board has four hearts and three overcards.

We’re not saying you shouldn’t bluff at all. Just do it a bit less often.

Play on Anonymous Tables

If you want to play on an even playing field, then you need to play at sites that offer anonymous tables. Anonymous tables disguise your identity every time you buy in, preventing other players from tracking your play.

Since they don’t know who you are, you can play whichever strategy you choose. You can try to mix it up or you can play a classic solid strategy to score consistent profits. Players will be unable to categorize you because they won’t know your identity.

Ignition Poker offers anonymous tables and is a great place to play online poker. Why not sign up and play there today?
